PRESS RELEASE FOR Theater of Truth(s) bit by bit

"Bit One"
A multi-media work by Ella Joseph @ offthemapgallery
Director & curater: Antonia Lancaster

Opening reception, Saturday March 6, 2-5pm
Show runs from March 3 - March 27, 2004

80 Spadina Avenue, 5th floor, Toronto, Canada M5V 2J4
Gallery Hours: Wednesday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm

The first in a series of new works to integrate performance, installation and video/new media, "Bit One" deals with the dimensions of every day life where, although not hidden, not everything is completely revealed. The art gallery setting of the piece persuades each person to bring with them, and carry away, their own truth. In line with the gallery experience, each viewer is not constrained by an expectation to see the whole, but instead, is freed from time and given the opportunity to have multiple viewings and, therefore, views of the same piece.

As a visual artist, Ella’s work spans ‘still to moving’ images through painting, photography, performance, video, installation, and stage design. In 2003, her video, "Euphoria or One Piece Always Missing", was shown in 15 European countries as part of the Euroscreen 21 project.

"Ella’s works are...silent poetry which gives very clear elements, that make you feel and think." Margarita Stavraki, Visual Artist, Greece

Ella Joseph earned a MA in Scenography from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London Institute, UK and Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, The Netherlands, a MFA in Theater Design from the University of British Columbia, Canada, and received training in video art production from the University of Art and Design Zurich, Switzerland.

PROJECTION TEXT:

"At last! I live as sheltered a life as possible. I go out only a few
hours a day. I don't go to the theatre anymore. I get up early every
morning and work until noon. After breakfast, I go back to my computer
and think. In the evening, I usually watch a movie or two until I fall
asleep. I start the next day with a fresh pot of coffee. As you can see,
there is nothing something in my life worth revealing."
