offthemapgallery is pleased to show Toronto artist Samina Mansuri’s latest work. In this work one steps into a world that is teeming with life and vitality. The inhabitants of this world are playful concrete expressions of Mansuri’s endless forming and reforming imagination born in the fecund and restless nature of our collective subconscious.
Antonia Lancaster, curator, offthemapgallery

SAMINA MANSURI: My recent work at offthemapgallery, an installation of paintings, drawings and sculpture expands on earlier drawings that speak to the human predicament and the inevitability of change pitted against our desire for permanence. The personas and identities we create to give form to this desire are constantly coming unhinged. They are intended as a testament not only to our vulnerability, but also to our inherent dynamism. The recent paintings 2002-2005 and the sculptures initiated during a recent residency at Banff, evolve from the earlier drawings and attempt to develop a visual language rooted in the human body which explores issues related to memory, desire, ideology and history. The paintings attempt the same in intense color and a space which is organic yet artificial. The forms are animated and everything is in flux. Several of the paintings work together with no implied narrative and the viewer plays an important role in making the meaning of the work.
